Glass making existed in the lagoon of Venice from as early as the 8th century. In the ensuing centuries the artisans of Venice began to accumulate skills in glass production, gathered in the course of the republic of Venice's extensive trade throughout the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa.

In 1291 the government banned glass furnaces from Venice, relocating them to the island of Murano. Some historians assume the move was due to the fear of fire from the furnaces, as Venice was largely constructed of wood. While others believe it was to isolate the master glassblowers and protect their production secrets from potential competitors abroad.

Venetian -or-Murano glassmaking became the leading source for fine glass in Europe, and is recognised for the cutting edge of artistic design and artisan skill that continues to characterize Murano glass down to the present day.
